Understanding smoking cessation
Studies to increase our understanding of the process of quitting and relapse prevention
This program of research, which is often undertaken in support of other projects and programs, is about understanding the determinants of smoking cessation better, and to use those insights to refine existing cessation interventions. James Balmford has recently completed a PhD, which systematically explored the stages of change concept for smoking cessation. Several papers are currently under review that emerged from that work.
Natalie Sambell has just begun a PhD and is looking at issues around better understanding adjustment to becoming a non-smoker, in the hope of developing better interventions to reduce relapse, particularly longer term relapse.
One specific project, which we are close to finishing, is Relapse Prevention by Augmenting Callbacks.
