Tobacco futures
The possible futures for tobacco control
The agenda for tobacco control set in the 1960s and 1970s has been largely achieved in countries like Australia, but a huge problem still remains. This area of work is about developing and testing ideas of alternative ways forward.
To date two broad themes have been pursued, apart from their addictiveness:
- the need for stronger regulation of the tobacco industry
- the implication of the recent epidemiology that some forms of smokeless tobacco are relatively low in long term harm potential
This was the topic of a plenary presentation to the 2006 World Conference on Tobacco or Health in Washington DC, USA.
